Bijay Jena, a physically-challenged youth of Barunsingh in Remuna block in Baleswar district, who had sought permission from the President of India and the Odisha Chief Minister for euthanasia a few days ago, committed suicide by consuming insecticide on Friday.
He also shot a video of himself consuming the poison and posted it on his WhatsApp status. Although he was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital he died in the evening.
After meeting with an accident in 2018, Jena was bed-ridden. He had earlier mentioned that he was suffering from a lot of pain and penury.
His father was suffering from paralysis while mother was visually impaired and the younger brother was jobless.
He took the extreme step as he felt that he was a burden for his family members, who were suffering from acute poverty. In the video, Jena said he did not blame anyone for ending his life and it was completely his own decision.
