A 28-year-old youth of Bhubaneswar on Wednesday landed up in police net for opening a fake Facebook account of a female acquaintance and blackmailed her by uploading weird materials in the social network site.

Registering a cyber case, the Crime Branch police arrested Rajaram Biswal of Bhimtangi Housing Board Colony on the charges of transmitting obscene materials, outraging modesty of a woman, defamation, forgery and criminal intimidation. The youth has also been  booked under Sections 66-A and 66-C of IT (Amendment) Act, 2008.Police investigations revealed that the youth had developed friendship with the girl of a nearby locality in the social network site and expressed his desire to marry her. The girl, however, spurned the marriage proposal but insisted to limit the relationship to friendship alone.

Frustrated over it, the youth opened a fake Facebook account in the girl’s name and pressurised her to marry him. Biswal also allegedly threatened the girl and her parents of dire consequences. Finding no other alternative, the girl approached the police. After collecting prima facie evidence against Biswal, the Cyber Crime Cell of the Crime Branch arrested him and forwarded him to court, said a release issued by the police headquarters here.

The cyber crimes have been on rise since the flourishing of the social networking sites (SNS’s).
