The Commissionerate police on Tuesday arrested an ITC company agent who had staged a fake loot case after spending the company’s money in gambling.
Three of his associates involved in the loot plan were also arrested. Police also recovered cash of Rs 33,000 from the accused.
The youth Jayant Kumar Sahoo had collected Rs 3.33 lakh from the company’s clients. However, he did not deposit the money in the bank accounts of the company. He invested the money in online gambling and lost it.
After spending the money, he thought of orchestrating a loot drama. Later, he along with three of his friends filed a police complaint that Rs 3.3 lakh collected from ITC clients was snatched from him.
ACP (Zone-3) Pradip Kumar Rout said police were investigating the complaints from various angles. “We also checked CCTV footage in the area where the loot was allegedly committed. We subjected the complainant Jayant Kumar Sahoo to sustained interrogation. During interrogation, we smelt something fishy in the matter,” the ACP said.
Rout further stated that Jayant’s statements were inconsistent. “Police further grilled him and he revealed how he squandered the money in gambling.
