The Academy of Yoga and Oriental Studies (AYOS) organised a two-day All India Yoga-Ayurveda Seminar here last week with the topics “Sarngadhara Samhita and its Contribution to Ayurveda” and “Yogic tenets in the Puranas”.

State Department of AYUSH Director Basudeba Bahinipati and Prof Alekh Chandra Sadangi were the guests at the meetings, which were presided over by AYOS Director Dr Indulata Das. The welcome speech was delivered by Bhaskar Chandra Pattnaik. Bahinipati said yoga and Ayurveda are sister disciplines; both are meant to make human life happy. He also elaborated on the steps taken by the Government of India to popularise yoga and Ayurveda.

Prof Sadangi said yoga is meant for human beings’ complete development. Yoga is not limited to any place, caste or community; it is meant for the whole humanity. Dr Indulata Das said man incurs huge debt from the society only by taking birth in the world. He gets his food, cloth, education and culture from the society. “And most of us do not give anything in return to the society. Therefore it is one’s most primary duty to do something for the society. By doing so, he does not do a favour to the society but liquidates a negligible amount of the debt mounted on him. The goal of the AYOS is to do a little service to the society without the least expectation of return,” she added.

After the inaugural session, the academic sessions started and continued for two days. Scholars who had come from different States of the country presented their papers on yoga and Ayurveda. The guests at the valedictory session were Prof Aditya Mohanty former Professor, Philosophy, Utkal University, and Dr Sudarsan Behera, Principal, Gopabandhu Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Puri. Dr Behera said Sarngadhara Samhita is a masterpiece. The medicines and the preparations described in the book are proved effective till now. Prof Mohanty said yoga acquaints one with himself. Man reaches his real goal by the help of yoga.
