Wrong blood infused; woman dies at K'jhar DHH

A woman died at the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Wednesday allegedly due to infusion of blood of a different group into her body.

The deceased was identified as Sukanti Nayak (50) of Puruna Bazar in Keonjhar town. Her family members have lodged an FIR against the CDMO and the ADMO at the Keonjhar Town police station.

According to reports, Nayak had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon due to kidney ailments. Doctors decided to administer her blood, following which her family members arranged it from the blood bank.

However, they alleged that the woman was administered A+ blood while her blood group was O+. The doctors and nurses didn’t examine the blood provided by the blood bank, they said.

“Sukanti started shivering after the blood was administered to her. We immediately called the nurse. She detached the blood unit from her and went away. We couldn’t find the nurse after that,” said Sukanti’s brother Sricharan Nayak.

Accepting administering of blood of a wrong group, Keonjhar CDMO Kabindra Prasad Sahoo said, “The concerned nurse should have checked the blood before administering it to the patient, but she didn’t do it. This is definitely a mistake on our part. I have ordered for a probe into the incidence. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty after the investigation.”

Informing about the confusion in blood administering, the official said, “While Sukanti Nayak was undergoing treatment in the medicine ward, another woman also namely Sukanti Nayak was admitted to the gynaecology ward. And both the patients required blood. The blood which was meant to be administered to the woman admitted in the gynaecology ward was given to Sukanti of the medicine ward.”
