The World Bank has come forward to assist the State Government for reconstruction efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by the Phailin.
World Bank Country Director for India Onno Ruhl has written to State Chief Secretary JK Mohapatra in this regard on Tuesday. Ruhl has congratulated the State Government for the successful operation of evacuation of people from the vulnerable areas. He said the World Bank stands ready to assist the State Government in any way it would deem desirable.
He said the World Bank support would be available for addressing the reconstruction efforts and increasing the risk mitigation efforts. The World Bank would be supporting these efforts through its ongoing National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP), he said.
He said support would be available for rehabilitating both the lives and livelihood of the affected people as well as rebuilding critical infrastructure and housing in the cyclone affected districts. A team of the Bank Group is likely to visit the State next week to assess the damages and talk to the Chief Secretary about the efforts of relief and rehabilitation of more than one crore people affected by the cyclone and floods.
In mid-June this year, the World Bank along with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had come forward to assist the Uttarakhand Government for rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts after the cloudburst caused ravages in that State.
