The renewed efforts to rescue two trapped drivers of JCB machines in a stone quarry at Bariput in Koraput district on Monday by NDRAF, ODRAF and Fire Services personnel did not yield any results.
Four JCB machines and a stone breaker have been engaged in the ongoing rescue operation.
A team of the Odisha Construction Corporation from Cuttack has also reached the spot.
“The huge boulders are being razed down with the stone breaker and being shifted with ropes and wires. Everything is being done with utmost care to avoid crashing down of more boulders from the hilltop,” said an official.
However, as more than five days have passed since the incident, the families of the two victims have lost hopes of the trapped workers being rescued alive.
Workers trapped in quarry yet to be rescued
Despite their best efforts, the rescuing agencies have not been able to move the huge stones which have piled up.
Meanwhile, Kotapad MlA Chandrasekhar Majhi visited the spot. He said that there is lack of coordination among the rescuing agencies and the district administration. They should seek the help of the Army or experts outside the State who have experience in handling such disasters.
