Worker's death sparks tension at JSpur chilling unit

Published on:
Tension ran high at Nuapada chilling plant on the outskirts of Tirtol area on Friday concerning the death of a labourer. The deceased was identified as Surendra Das (45), a resident of nearby Palligada village under Nuapada panchayat.
Reports said that Surendra on Thursday night fainted while working inside the plant and was sent to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. But he died there on Friday morning.  Hundreds of local residents and chilling plant staff staged a protest keeping the body in front of plant and demanded compensation for the deceased’s kin. They destroyed about 25,000 liters of milk collected from several milk societies across Jagatsinghpur district.
The plant authorities later held a talk with the protestors and awarded `10,000 for the bereaved family and assured of giving a job to one member of the family. This made the agitators call off their stir.
