Work for waste-to-energy plant at Bhuashuni soon

The State Government on Wednesday decided to construct the proposed waste-to-energy plant at Bhuasuni in Bhubaneswar in compliance with the orders of the Orissa High Court and the National Green Tribunal.

For this, the State Pollution Control Board would hold a public hearing at proposed site on June 6.

A decision in this regard was taken at a review meeting of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) project of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) presided over by Chief Secretary AP Padhi at the Secretariat. BMC Commissioner Krishan Kumar presented the updates.

“A waste management plant is an absolute necessity for a modern and growing city like Bhubaneswar. In this regard, the High Court and the NGT have given directions. We would implement these orders for construction of the plant,” Padhi told reporters.

Kumar said the SPCB would hold a public hearing for the plant on June 6, 2017 in presence of BMC and police personnel.

The SWM project includes development of scientific dumping yard and establishment of energy to waste plant for safe and secured processing of the waste. All the preparatory works for the project have been completed, an official said.

While the High Court has in an interim order asked the BMC to go ahead with dumping of the solid waste at Bhuasuni landfill site, the NGT has directed the Housing and Urban Development Department and police to remove the obstructions posed by any element for construction of waste to energy plant.
