Strongly opposing the demolition of the first Mahila vending zone in the city, the affected women traders under the banner of the Shree Jagannath Mahila Samiti on Sunday demanded that BMC Commissioner Krishna Kumar be sacked from his post immediately.
The women alleged that the BMC Commissioner has defied the Supreme Court rule and the Street Vendors Act by demolishing the vending zone without any prior resettlement arrangements.
Besides, some male police personnel thrashed many women vendors, who opposed the eviction drive, and abused them with filthy languages, said Samiti president Golap Bairibhanjan and Vendors’ Association State president Pratap Sahu.
The body also demanded termination of all the staffs engaged during the eviction drive, compensation of Rs 50,000 each towards the affected traders, rehabilitation of the traders and provision of ID cards to them and rehabilitation of those traders under the Urban Challenge Fund.
