Amidst the flood fury in Rayagada district, officials of the Department of Health rescued two pregnant women suffering from labour pain and ensured safe deliveries of their babies at the District Headquarters Hospital.

The women were identified as Kanchaka Balsi and Sabita from villages of Gopalpur and Nuagaon, respectively.

The distressed women were in labour pain, a tweet of the Health and Family welfare department said, adding that both delivered babies safely.

Besides, the health authorities in Koraput district brought 16 pregnant women from their villages and settled them in the Maa Gruha before their deliveries.

While a total of 56 women have been rescued and brought to the Maa Gruha ahead of their deliveries, 16 had been shifted from vulnerable areas, official sources said.

The highest number of eight women was rescued from lamtapur block and four brought from the Kotpad area. Two pregnant women from Baipariguda and laxmipur blocks each were brought to safe places for deliveries, the sources said.

The Koraput district administration has drawn a plan under which a pregnant women data base is prepared through Asha Workers. The women, ahead of a week of their expected dates, are brought to safe place and the administration ensures institutional deliveries in order to check IMR and MMR in the tribals-dominated district.
