A group of irate women and other locals staged a demonstration before a liquor shop here on Sunday and smashed the signboards put up before it.

The protest took place near the Biju Patnaik International Airport at noon when the women accompanied by other locals reached the shop located beside the new airport road and held the demonstration.

They demanded immediate closure of the shop and alleged that due to the shop, the law and order situation has deteriorated in the area and women folk are facing problems in commuting because of the menace of drunkards.

Besides, as vehicles are haphazardly parked by those visiting the shop, traffic jams have become a routine affair, they pointed out.

The Airfield police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the angry protesters. Normalcy was restored after additional police forces were rushed to the location.
