At least 400 women belonging to many Self-Help Groups (SHGs) armed with bamboo sticks on Thursday ransacked a licensed foreign liquor shop at village Jaraka in Jajpur district. They also blocked the village road for more than three hours.
Many villagers, including women, have been opposing the sale of liquor at Jaraka and nearby villages. "We had submitted memorandums to the district Collector, district Superintendent of Police and the excise officials several times to stop the sale of liquor. But the authorities did not pay any heed to our pleas," said Sabita Deuri of Jaraka.
