Woman's gang-rape organised by cousin brother-sister duo

It may be a rare case in the history of crimes in Odisha.

Though there are instances of relatives killing one another, here is a case where a blood relation, that too a woman, organised gang-rape of a 28-year-old woman undergoing nun’s training at the St Mary Convent in Chennai.  And one of the alleged rapists is a cousin brother of the victim.

The victim was told over phone by her cousin sister (elder father’s daughter) that she should be back in home as her mother was serious. When the trainee nun arrived at the Brahmapur railway station, she was received by her cousin brother.

The cousin brother kidnapped and drugged her before raping her along with two others. Her sister knew everything and helped her brother rape the cousin!

The shocking incident took place at a village under the Brahmanigaon police station in Kandhamal district. The victim, after going through one week’s ordeal, was dropped at the same Brahmapur railway station and told to return Chennai. She was also threatened not to disclose the incident to anyone.

The victim, however, returned to her village and reported the matter to the Brahamnigaon police. Thanks to the initiative of young police officer Kanwar Vishal Singh, SDPO of Baliguda in Kandhamal district, the police lodged an FIR on July 13 at the Brahmanigaon police station even as the incident took place at other places. A case was registered under Sections 355, 366, 343, 376-D/506, 120(b) of IPC.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested the victim’s cousin brother Jotindra Sabhasunder, cousin sister Nalini Sabhasunder and brother’s associate Tukuma Sabhasunder. All the accused persons are residents of the victim’s Minzapanka village. Incidentally, investigations revealed that the victim trainee nun’s brother was a co-accused in the murder of a blood relation in 2011.

The police nabbed the accused persons after conducting repeated raids based on various intelligence inputs and with help of the neighbouring Gajapati police as and when required. Medical examinations of the victim and all accused persons have been done, after the other legal procedures are being followed, said the police. The incident was closely monitored by DIG, Southern Range Amitabh Thakur. “We will chargesheet the case as soon as possible and ensure conviction based on the evidence,” said the police.
