Woman's charred body found in Udala

Police recovered a half-charred body of a woman near Chandan Pokhari at Radho village under Udala block in Mayurbhanj district in the wee hours on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Jamuna Khatua.

While the woman’s in-laws claimed that she committed suicide, her parents alleged that she was murdered.

“My daughter had visited our house a few days ago and asked for Rs 40,000. I expressed my inability to give such a big amount. However, I had told her that I would help her with the amount once I arrange the money. My son-in-law had threatened me over phone that he would send my daughter’s body if I send her back (without money). My daughter ignored it and went back to her in-laws’ place as her two children were there. I got a call from my son-in-law at around 1 am asking me to take my daughter as she has committed suicide by pouring kerosene on her,” Surendra Barik, father of the deceased, said.

Meanwhile, police detained the woman’s husband Rabindra Khatua for interrogation.
