A 40-year-old woman was trampled to death by an elephant at Kaunriapal village under Odapada block in Dhenkanal district in the wee hours of Friday. She was identified as Urmila, wife of one Dheeren Nayak.
Urmila had gone to a nearby field to defecate when the wild animal appeared all of a sudden and attacked her, killing her on the spot. Receiving information, a team of police and forest personnel led by the DFO reached the spot and sent the woman’s body to the District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem. While a compensation of Rs 40,000 was immediately provided to the family members of the deceased, another sum of Rs 3.6 lakh would be paid as per official provision after necessary paper work, said a forest official.
