A woman staged protest in front of her husband's house on Valentine's Day in Sundargarh to allow her to stay with him in the house.
According to sources, Khusbu Gupta, daughter of Parameswar Gupta, a resident of Kohanjharia village of Jashpur district of Chhatisgarh, had married one Umesh Gupta, a resident of Panchamukhi para under town police station in Sundargarh in 2018.
Khusbu's parents had given Rs 2 lakh cash as dowry to Umesh's parents and also had given other items worth Rs 50,000 to them at the time of marriage. After some months of marriage, the in-laws of Khusbu allegedly tortured her and Khusbu's sister-in-law (husband's sister) allegedly had beaten her up. Khusbu could not bear the torture of in-laws following which she went to her parent's house on July 29, 2018.
During Khusbu's stay at her parents’ house, nobody from her in-laws’ house, including her husband, came to take her to her husband's house. Even Khusbu had come to her in-laws’ house four different times to stay there but she was not allowed to enter into the house.
Finding no other alternative, Khusbu lodged complaint in the Town police station on December 14 and the police after registering case of torture and dowry, arrested her husband Umesh and forwarded him to court. Later Umesh was released on bail.
Meanwhile, some members of Sundargarh Zilla Women Parisad including its president Kamini Mohapatra and former Councillor Bina Sahu extended their support to Khusbu. They also demanded that her in-laws and her husband accept Khusbu, otherwise they must return the dowry items and cash. After getting information, the police officials reached the spot and took Khusbu, Umesh and her in-laws to the police station.
“We have told Khusbu to give a list of articles which her parents had given as dowry. After getting the list, we will seize the articles from her in-laws and will return th m to her patents,” said Town police station IIC B K Pradhan. He added that Umesh has given consent to return the cash and dowry articles.
