A man residing under the Kamarda police limits in Baleswar district’s Bhograi bock allegedly pronounced triple talaq to his wife over phone and the victim woman was made to consume poison by in-laws for protesting the pronouncement.

The victim, Khusboo, has been undergoing treatment in the Baleswar District Headquarters Hospital since Thursday.

The matter came to the fore after the parents of the victim lodged a complaint with local police in this regard.

“Basing on an FIR lodged by the victim’s mother, a case has been registered under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, Dowry Prevention Act and various sections of the IPC,” said Kamarda PS IIC Paskal Ekka.

According to reports, Khusboo, daughter of Ayub Khan and Phul Biwi, was married to Sk Rehamat, son of Sk Sola,  of village Aruanbruti about two and half years ago. The couple has an 18-month-old daughter.

She was being subjected to mental as well as physical torture by her husband, in-laws and other family members for want of desired dowry.

Rehamat, who was at workplace outside the State, allegedly spelt triple talaq to Khusboo over phone a week back. Knowing this, Khusboo’s parents sought help from villagers of his community. Villagers advised them to wait till arrival of Rehamat in his village.

On his return from workplace, Rehamat asked Khusboo why she was still home. Then, he along with others of his family beat her severely, asking her to vacate their house.

Later, she was forced to consume pesticide, alleged her family members.

Sources said the accused has been on the run.

“The case is under investigation and action would be taken as per law,” said Jaleswar SDPO Sudarshan Dash.
