A 60-year-old woman was on Wednesday trampled to death by a tusker at Paladhuaalli village under the Khallikote Forest Range in Ganjam district. The victim, identified as Saibani Nayak, was taken to the nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, said Brahmapur Divisional Forest Officer SS Mishra. The woman encountered the wild elephant while going to the nearby forest. The DFO said a herd of eight elephants, including the tusker, were camping in the area and the herd might have migrated from Humma area to Khallikote in search of food. A ten-member elephant drive squad was deployed in the area to track the movement of the animals, forest officials said.
