A woman in the capital city was allegedly duped of Rs 27 lakh by cybercriminals on the pretext of proving her of job. The matter came to light after she lodged a complaint with the Cyber police.
The victim had registered on a job website for employment opportunities. However, when she didn't receive any job offers from the website for long, she searched for the contact number of the website on search engine Google for the contact number of the website and landed in the clutches of fraudsters.
The fraudsters offered her a lucrative job instead and wanted her to get involved in digital marketing, where she would have to buy some products and then like and share their reviews on social media to earn commission.
She deposited Rs 14 lakh in the e-wallet provided by the fraudsters. Just within a month of work, she found Rs 2 lakh commission reflecting on the wallet. However, she could not withdraw the commission even after trying multiple times. When she contacted the fraudsters, they convinced her to deposit Rs 13 lakh in order to be able to encash the commission.
Once she deposited the money in the wallet, the fraudsters deleted all their WhatsApp profiles and blocked her number.
Later, based on her complaint, police arrested two fraudsters from Kolkata. However, the prime accused was still absconding.
