In an act of justice to the pregnant stray dog that was mercilessly beaten to death here some days back, the Lingaraj police registered a case against the woman culprit on Thursday.

Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahoo informed that the culprit has been identified and booked under Sections 268 and 429 of IPC and Section 11 of the Cruelty to Animal Prevention Act.

“In view of the Supreme Court’s direction on arrest during Covid-10 pandemic, a notice has been served and the accused woman will be charge-sheeted soon,” said Sahoo.

It may be pointed out that the heartrending incident had taken place on April 21 when the woman in the Old Town area here accompanied by a few other persons thrashed the pregnant stray dog on the road with a rod. Unable to bear the pain after being beaten, the animal collapsed on the spot.

The injured dog was taken to veterinarians by some animal lovers. The doctors had to pull out three pups from the dog’s womb as it was in no condition to give birth. Although the delivery was successful, the surgery could not save the dog. Later, one of her puppies died within hours.

The incident angered animal lovers residing in the State capital while some of them filed a case at the Lingaraj police station demanding arrest of the cruel woman.
