Baripada Sadar Block Chairman Parbati Hembram was allegedly thrashed and garlanded with shoes by some villagers of Nuadihi in Mayurbhanj district.
The incident was recorded by a mobile phone and the video went viral on social media after being posted.
According to reports, Hembram was supporting a youth of Ranibhola village who had in March kidnapped a minor girl of Nuadihi.
The mother of the abducted girl had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Sadar police stating that Hembram was pressurising her to get her daughter married to the kidnapper.
On July 26, when Hembram came to Nuadihi to discuss the matter, the victim girl’s mother and some villagers allegedly assaulted her and forced her to wear a garland of shoes.
The Block Chairman has filed a police complaint over the attack on her. Police have started investigation into the incident.
