Despite stringent laws against domestic violence, women continue to be victims of physical torture by their spouses.
An incident was reported from Padmapur under the Vyasanagar Municipality of Jajpur district where a woman was inhumanly assaulted by her husband and branded with a hot iron rod on her entire body.
The victim, identified as Jhuma Kajual, is undergoing treatment at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Jajpur Road where her condition is stated to be critical.
According to reports, Jhuma had a love marriage with Rabi Kajual of Sapa Gadia in Jajpur district seven years ago. The couple has a daughter (5) and a son (3).
The incident occurred following heated argument between the two while their children were playing outside the house on Saturday. Suddenly, Rabi closed the door from inside and started beating up his wife without mercy for two hours. Later, he branded Jhuma with a hot iron rod on her entire body from head to toe.
After hearing screaming of the woman, neighbours rescued her in critical condition and rushed here to the CHC for treatment. Sources said the doctors have referred her to the SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack. The victim held her husband responsible for her condition.
Till the filing of the report, no complaint was registered at a police station.
When the Jajpur Road police station was contacted, the police said that no written complaint had been made in this regard so far and action would be taken against the accused after the woman recovers from her injuries.
