Two persons, including a 62-year-old woman, were crushed to death as a speeding truck hit them near Panchupandav Chowk on the Paradip-Daitary Expressway on early Thursday morning.
The duo, identified as Sachi Khatua and Balaram Jagaty (35) of Kusunpur, met with the accident when they were going to pluck flowers on the roadside of the Expressway.
Irate locals staged a road blockade near the accident spot demanding that the district administration provide compensation to the deceased’s families.
Derabish BDO Pitambar Samal disbursed a sum of Rs 10,000 to each of the families from the District Red Cross fund along with `2,000 each from the Harischandra Yojana for performing the funeral ceremonies.
The road blockade was later withdrawn. The police seized the truck and arrested its driver Preet Mahato, informed Derabish PS IIC Nilakantha Prasad Patra.
