Fire brigade personnel and police rescued a woman and her daughter from an islet in the midst of flooded Kathajodi river in the Barang area on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the mother-daughter duo from VSS Nagar in Bhubaneswar was out of danger after first aid and were in their house now.
They apparently made an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide by jumping into the river. However, police outright denied the suicide bid but were not able to explain how the duo reached the desolate islet in the midst of the flooded river while their vehicle was parked in the middle of a bridge.
Eyewitnesses said the duo came by a two-wheeler from Trishulia side onto the new bridge over the river connecting Cuttack and suddenly plunged one after the other into the river. The river in spate swept them to another islet nearby.
