In an unenviable record, the number of excise-related cases hit an all-time high in the Twin City of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar in 2014. However, the number of murder cases dropped during the period. After the annual crime review meeting of the Commissionerate police, Commissioner of Police RP Sharma informed mediapersons that 684 excise-related cases were registered last year, of which 404 were listed in Cuttack alone. An all-time high of 66,160 cases were registered in 2014 for drunken driving and violation of traffic rules, among others.

As far as murder cases, while 42 were registered in Bhubaneswar, 36 were recorded in Cuttack. Of the 469 habitual offenders booked under Section 110 of CrPC during the year, 308 were arrested in Cuttack. There were 12 dacoities in Bhubaneswar and the police were able to recover 86 per cent of the amounts. There were 123 loot cases and 286 burglary incidents, informed Sharma. The police were able to seize 92 weapons during 2014, he added.
