'When executive fails, judiciary intervenes'

Published on:

When the executive fails to act properly, the judiciary intervenes in the matter,” said retired High Court Justice BP Das here on Friday while addressing a seminar on ‘Judicial accountability in India’ organised by the Progressive lawyers’ Association (PlA).

Das said that most of the people in the country complain against the executive for not doing a job properly. The failure of the pillar of this Constitution is creating many problems and the judiciary is coming forward to give justice to the people, he added. National law University Odisha Vice-Chancellor Dr V Nagraj emphasised on a strong judiciary which can save the country’s democracy. “If we want to upward democracy, we have to strengthen the judiciary; otherwise mafia raj will rule the country,” he observed.

On accountability of the judges, he said the judiciary has its own mechanism to rectify the judges. It has its own vigilance system to keep an eye on the judges, he added. Nagraj expressed grave concern over the declining of judge population in India compared to other countries. A strong motivation is needed to bring the talented youths to the profession of law.

A souvenir of the PlA was released at the seminar. Social activist Prafulla Samantara, scientist Nachiketa Das, journalists Prafulla Das and Satyaprakash Nayak, RTI activists Pradip Pradhan and Subrat Prusty and film producer Keshab Rout were felicitated by the association.   Among others, Justice PK Mishra, PlA general activist Bibhu Prasad Tripathy and social activist Chittaranjan Behera were present.
