The Baleswar district administration on Tuesday demolished a signage put up illegally near Udaipur beach on Odisha-West Bengal border by the neighouring State Government.
The administration termed the signage, which had mentions of “Digha Sea Beach, Protection and Beautification Work” as “illegal and intrusion’” as it was installed 20 meters inside Odisha’s land.
The Baleswar Sub-Collector, Bhograi Tehsildar and senior police officials were present. Though the Revenue Department had opposed intrusion of Odisha land, the West Bengal authorities didn’t accept it. Peeved at the WB’s adamant attitude, the district administration razed the structure.
“The Baleswar Collector had urged his East Medinapur counterpart to remove the signage about a month ago. Though the neighbouring district administration had conceded, yet it was not complied. Since the signage was hurting the sentiments of Baleswar people, the administration razed it today,” said Sub-Collector Nilu Mohapatra.
Adequate police forces were deployed during the eviction drive.
