Noted weightlifter, social worker and treasurer of the Sri Beer Hanuman Circus and Physical Institute of Brahmapur, Surya Narayan Satapathy passed away at his Nimakhandi residence here on Wednesday. He was 67. He was suffering from lever cancer since last few years.
Satapathy was a very popular athlete and weightlifter. He was respected by his peers, friends, sports lovers for his sincerity and dedication to sports in the district.
His dead body was taken in grief in a procession from his residence to the Nimakhandi burial ground for cremation with hundreds of supporters, senior citizens, sports lovers and club members.
BJP leader Rama Chandra Panda said the death of Satapathy is a great loss to Ganjam district in particular and the sports world in general.
