WB cops take Red Star leader on remand

Police produced West Bengal’s most wanted CPI(Ml) Red Star leader Alik Chakraborty in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court here on Friday.

The court allowed the West Bengal police to take Chakraborty on a four-day remand.

But Chakraborty said it is a conspiracy by the West Bengal Government to frame him. While the police produced him in the court, the activists of the Odisha unit of CPI(Ml) Red Star held a demonstration outside the court protesting against the arrest of their leader.

Chakraborty, against whom around 70 cases were pending at various police stations in the neighbouring State, had come to the Kalinga Hospital here for treatment where the cops nabbed him.

“We had been informed about Chakraborty’s movements by the West Bengal police and their personnel had been camping here for past few days. Soon after Chakraborty reached the hospital, the cops nabbed him,” said Police Commissioner YB Khurania.

However, Chakraborty’s arrest has once again brought into limelight that due to the weak intelligence gathering, top criminals are making Bhubaneswar a safe hideout for such elements.

Earlier, Maoist leader Anna Reddy and north India’s most wanted don Brijesh Singh and many others had been arrested from the city.
