'Waive loans as peasants at distress'

Published on:

The BJP on Saturday demanded that the State Government waive farm loans fully as farmers are leading a miserable life now as their crops were damaged due to scanty rainfall, brown grasshopper attack and untimely rains, consecutively. Party State vice-president Sameer Mohanty made the demand while alleging that the increase in number of farmer deaths due to “crop loss and loan burden” indicates the State Governments “utter failure” to provide support to peasants. He said BJP-ruled States like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have provided waived farm loans during times of distress of farmers. But the BJD is shedding crocodiles instead of providing support to farmers, he said. Reminding that CM Naveen Patnaik had earlier stated in public that farm loan waiver was under his consideration, Mohanty wanted to know why the Government is delaying in making an announcement in that regard. He also wanted to know why the State Government is yet to give bonus of Rs 100 per quintal of paddy over MSP when one year has already passed since the CM made an announcement in this regard.
