Justice DH Waghela would assume charge as the new Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court on Thursday. Prior to his new assignment, he was officiating as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. He was transferred here in April by a Presidential warrant of appointment and was asked to join in his new position within two months.
According to the High Court Registry sources here, Justice Waghela would arrive on Wednesday and Governor Dr SC Jamir would administer the oath of office to him on Thursday although the High Court is currently in the midst of summer vacation. With the assumption of charge by Justice Waghela, the strength of the High Court bench would complete its full sanctioned strength. The law Commission of India had in 2006 recommended for 29 judges in the High Court to clear the backlog of cases within five years, but the State Government has accorded sanction for only 22 judges, including the Chief Justice.
