The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), admitting a petition filed by human rights activist and advocate Prabir Kumar Das pertaining to the April 10 deaths of three women at the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla, has issued notice to the State Government seeking factual reports. A Division Bench headed by Commission Chairman Justice (Retd) BK Mishra and BK Patnaik issued the notices to the hospital superintendent and Sambalpur district SP asking them to submit separate reports within 30 days and fixed June 9, 2015 for the next hearing.

Das in his petition has sought the OHRC's intervention for a high-level inquiry into the causes of the death of the women, who had undergone caesarean section surgery, and fixing responsibility on the erring persons. Seeking compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, the petition has sought judicial intervention for appropriate measures in place for preventing recurrence of such tragedies in future. At least nine expectant mothers had undergone CS surgery in the hospital on the day of the incident.
