Vizag doctor moves lower court for bail

While a habeas corpus writ seeking immediate release of the arrested Vishakhapatnam doctor N Prabhakar Babu from detention of Cuttack police is now pending disposal in the Odisha High Court, Babu’s counsel on Monday made a bail application before a lower court in the city. “We made an application seeking bail in the ADJ Court and hope it will be taken up for consideration soon,” said Babu’s counsel Satyabrata Pradhan.

Babu was arrested by the police from his Vishakhapatnam-based private hospital in June this year in connection with an illegal kidney transplantation involving a Cuttack woman. Since the court in which the doctor was produced has rejected the bail and remanded the accused to judicial custody, the ailing doctor is now lodged in the Choudwar jail here.

Meanwhile, the doctors’ wife N Rathnakumari has moved the High Court seeking immediate release of her husband from the police detention. Hearing on the petition is over and the High Court has reserved its judgment.
