looking at the growing number of cancer patients and the lack of treatment facility in western Odisha, the Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (MGCHRI), Vishakhapatnam has opened a clinic at Sambalpur.

Reputed oncologists from Vishakhapatnam will be available on every second Saturday of the month for treatment of the patients.  If the number of patients will increase, the frequency may be increased, said Dr Kahnau Charan Patro, senior medical officer cum radiation oncologist from the MGCHRI.

“Since this devastating disease is a leading cause of death and lack of treatment facility is another concern, the MGCHRI feels the necessity of such a facility centre here where after preliminary diagnosis, patients will be advised for right treatment according to the stage of the disease. If necessary, they would also be referred for developed treatment and poor patients will also be given due care,” Dr Patro added.

At the first phase, the clinic will function in the life line Diagnostic near the District Headquarters Hospital.

Senior surgical oncologist Dr Murali Krishna Voonna and other staff of the MGCHRI will also remain present on the same day, Dr Patro informed.

“Treatment apart, the staff of the MGCHRI will also create awareness among the people on how to prevent cancer,” he said further.
