Tension prevailed in the Utkal University campus here after a bomb was hurled at a ladies’ hostel on Sunday evening by unidentified miscreants.
Sources said the incident was fallout of a clash between two rival groups of students in the afternoon near the main entrance of the university.
Sources said some unidentified miscreants hurled a bomb, which hit the boundary wall of the ladies hostel. There were no reports of any injuries to anyone.
Getting information, Commissioner of Police YB Khurania and DCP Satyabrata Bhoi rushed to the spot with police forces.
Viewing the deteriorating situation, the police clamped Section 144 of CrPC in the campus.
All the canteens in the university campuses were also vacated by the police.
The bombing incident, ahead of the Students’ Union polls scheduled on September 23, has triggered panic among the students as the police had earlier beefed up security in the campus to prevent untoward incidents.
DCP Bhoi said four platoons of police force have been deployed in the campus to maintain peace. If required, additional forces would be deployed. A watch is being kept on the situation to prevent any further deterioration in the situation.
Earlier on September 13 also, violence had rocked the campus. A group clash had left two students, including a presidential candidate, injured.
