A research paper on sickle cell disease in children prepared by the doctors of the Paediatrics Department of VIMSAR, Burla has received recognition in the recently concluded national conference of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics 2017, entitled PEDICON, held in Bangalore.

On the guidance of the Associate Professor Dr Prakash Chandra Panda, two other doctors of the same department and the Sickle Cell Research Centre Dr Chandra Sekhar Patra and Dr Nihar Ranjan Mishra prepared the paper that is very useful for the patients of western Odisha since this part is very much prone to the particular disease.

“Chosen as one of the top six  research projects out of 60-odd submitted in 'Hematology category' from across the nation from different colleges and research institutes ,the project  relates to evaluation of efficacy and safety issues of the simple drug ‘Paracetamol’ -the common drug used for fever control when used as injectable form to control the ‘pain attacks’ commonly seen in sickle cell disease patients,” informed Dr Panda.

It is mentioned that the common medicine Paracetamol can be of immense help to reduce the pain of sickle cell disease although it is common medicine to treat fever. The side effect of Paracitamol in comparison to other medicine is very negligible. But it is very effective in treating sickle cell disease, opined Dr Panda and Dr Patra.
