Even though many of them are spending nights under the open sky, flood-affected villagers in Kendrapada district are not repairing their damaged houses fearing they would be deprived of Government assistances.
With many areas have been clear of floodwater, the villagers were found to have kept the ravaged portions of their houses in as it is condition till the enumeration process was carried out by the Government officials.
According to Kendrapada District Emergency Officer Ranjan Kanta Mohanty, around 3,611 mud-walled houses have collapsed and the enumeration process is still being carried out by Tehsildars and BDOs in affected areas to ascertain the exact number.
Though some of them have resources to repair their damaged houses, people have largely opted for keeping things disorderly to ensure that compensation doles do not elude them, Mohanty said.
