A public hearing for establishment of a calcined petroleum coke manufacturing unit along with a power plant based on waste heat recovery boiler by Kalinga Calciner ltd was held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Paradip ADM Surajit Das. OSPCB Regional Officer Santosh Kumar Panda attended the meeting.

A majority of villagers of Chhakki, Udayabata and Paradipgarh opined that due to the eco-friendly project of the company there is no threat to the environment of the locality.

The company in the first phase will use equipments like ventury scrubber and bag filters to arrest the only possible pollution due to suspended particulate matters. As the manufacturing technology does not envisage use of any processed water, there is no probability of water pollution. Moreover, there will be no solid waste generated in the process. The generator sets will be of silent type and housed in acoustically treated rooms.

When the second phase is implemented, it will become more eco-friendly as the effluent gas carrying substantial heat will be utilised to produce power through waste heat recovery boiler and, thus, green power will be generated without burning any fossil fuel and there will be almost no suspended particulate matter left in the effluent gas carrying out through the stack.

The company has already contributed a substantial fund for lighting of roads at Paradip.

Paradip Municipality chairperson Manjulata Jena, vice-chairman Basant Biswal and Coastal Odisha Eco Foundation general secretary Chinmaya Das attended the meeting alon with company manager (administration) Jyoti Ranjan Rajaram Panda and manager (operation) Subrat Kumar Mallick.
