As per the directions of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Odisha Government has paid compensation of Rs 7 lakh to the family members of an electrocution victim of Bargarh district.

Earlier, human right activist Sitakanta Tripathy had moved the NHRC alleging that a woman, Mahima Bariha (42), a resident of  Sujia village under the Barpali police, was electrocuted while plucking flowers.

The fatal incident happened due to negligence and casual approach of the Energy Department towards the safety and security of people.

Taking cognsance of the petition, the commission directed the State Government directed a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to be paid to her family members.

Accordingly, the two sons have already been paid 2.33 lakh each. However, the husband of the deceased could not be paid due to the non-availability of a Legal Heir certificate and the non-production of authenticated documents on his behalf.

The NHRC has asked the Chief Secretary to disburse the rest of the compensation at the earliest and submit the compliance report along with proof of payment to the commission within six weeks.
