Hundreds of street vendors on Monday staged a protest meeting in front of the Jharsuguda Municipality demanding vending zone spaces at different locations in the town.
“The Odisha High Court direction to give them a space within eight weeks from the day of order has not been implemented by the municipality authorities till date. Before expiry of this period, they had also staged protests to remind their demands,” vendors said. The vendors met municipality Chairman Haris Ganatra and urged him to fulfill their demand.
Ganatra said a place has been selected for the vending zone by the district administration but all the 84 vendors cannot be accommodated there as a lot of space is required for road and parking.
A meeting in this regard would be held on September 28 between the district administration and the association to arrive at a final solution, informed the Chairman.
“Vendors will resort to fast-unto-death agitation if demands are not fulfilled within a specified time limit,” said association president Irsad Ahmad, V-P Samim Akhtar and secretary Santosh Panigrahi.
