An under-trial prisoner (UTP) of the Bonei Sub-Jail, while being brought back to the jail after hearing at the SDJM Court on Saturday morning, escaped on the way. Another inmate of the same jail, also present on the same vehicle, attempted to flee but was nabbed later.
Sources said, 15 days back, Chandiposh police had arrested one Bijay Pradhan, a native of Vedvyas area of Rourkela city, in a loot incident. Pradhan had been forwarded to the Bonei sub jail, after rejection of his bail plea. Since his case was to be heard on Saturday at the SDJM Court, Banai, Pradhan along with 16 other inmates of the jail, were brought in tight police custody to the court.
After completion of hearing, while the police team was shifting all the inmates to the security van, Pradhan and another inmate identified as Nana Nayak, attempted to escape from the police’s clutch. Police persons present on the spot were able to nab Nayak whereas Pradhan escaped from the spot. A manhunt is on.
