Use old bus stand for city buses, demand B'pur locals

There has been a persistent demand for declaration of the old bus stand of Brahmapur as city bus stand for easy access to city bus services.

The newly formed Biju Patnaik Swapna Shakaar Manch (BPSSM) demanded that the State Government and the BMC should immediately declare the old bus stand as the city bus stand so that all the city buses start plying from here.

It may be noted that after the construction of the new bus-stand near the MKCG Medical College two years back, all the buses of the OSRTC which were plying from the old bus stand are now plying from the new bus stand. Hence, the old bus stand, which is in the heart of the city, is lying idle. While the old bus-stand is currently declared by the BMC as a parking zone, a part of its land is also under the occupation of some hotel owners and taxi owners.

“Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik flagged off the city bus service on February 27 from Brahmapur to three adjoining NAC towns, namely, Chatrapur, Hinjili, and Gopalpur under the title of Ganjam Urban Transport Services limited (GUTSl). The old bus stand which is in a posh location under the BMC would be the most convenient location for every traveler to avail bus. If the Government does not take appropriate step in converting the old bus stand to city bus stand, we will be forced to resort to dharana on March 5,” said the manch organiser N Bhimaraju Reddy.

In the meantime, advocate Kumuda Prasad Acharya also has made a similar demand. He demanded plying of a city bus from Mentu Square of Old Brahmapur to the Engineering School and Railway Station via Utkal Cinema and Gandhinagar road as it is the busiest zone.
