To mark the 17th National Technology Day, the National Aluminium Company limited (Nalco) organised a talk on “GOD Particle (Higgs Boson) and the Infant Universe at CERN” at its Corporate Office here on Monday.

Padma Bhushan Prof Bikash Sinha, INSA Emeritus Scientist, former Homi Bhabha Professor, DAE; former Director, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics & Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata, was the chief

speaker.

Prof Sinha explained how in about a microsecond after the Big Bang, a standard model must have consisted of quarks, leptons (electrons, etc) and photons (light particle), the mechanism that generates the mass of these elementary particles, Higgs Boson (GOD Particle) and the Higgs mechanism.

He explained why the universe must have been much smaller and hence, much denser and hotter in the past.

He also highlighted the contribution of Indian scientists and philosophers in the field including that of Kanad (200 BC), Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, Meghnad Saha, Satyendra Nath Bose, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Homi Jehangir Bhabha.

Nalco CMD NR Mohanty, who presided over the function, emphasised the importance of the National Technology Day. Company ED (P&T) SK Dash introduced the guest and GM (R&D) Subrat Kar offered a vote of thanks.

The program was attended by eminent scientists, technologists and engineers from various organisations apart from Nalco employees.
