Unit 8 fish market razed to avoid bird hit problem

The joint team of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), the General Administration (GA) and the Commissionerate Police on Friday demolished fish market at Unit 8 and over 100 roadside shops from Stewart school square to Delta square to avoid the bird hit problem faced by the flights while coming on the way to the Airport here.

According to the plan, the joint team would clear the area from unwanted things that attract birds. Notably, five bird hit incidents have been reported which caused damage to the plane, said the Director of the Biju Patnaik Airport.

Though the Bhubaneswar Development Authority commissioner said that they have demarcated a land to rehabilitate the fish market vendors, the roadside vendors along with the fish market vendors led by the All Orissa Roadside Vendors’ Association (AORVA) opposed the demolition terming it illegal.

“Demolition of roadside vendors without rehabilitating them is very unfortunate,” said All Orissa Roadside Vendors’ Association  president Pratap Sahu and added that they would gherao Airport office and BMC office here protesting the demolition of roadside shops without doing a survey to rehabilitate them.
