An under-trial rape accused escaped from the Jajpur Sub-jail here on Thursday evening.
The fugitive was identified as Rajesh Munda, a resident of Keonjhar district.
The Jajpur Town police have registered a case in this connection and launched a hunt to nab Munda.
Sources said Munda, who was arrested on charges of rape and lodged at the Jajpur sub-jail took advantage of the heavy rain on the day and fled from the jail by jumping over the boundary wall.
The jail authorities came to know about his escape after a staff went to his cell to provide him dinner at around 9 pm.
The authorities have also ordered a departmental inquiry to ascertain how could the prisoner evade security and flee from the prison.
