U'kote roads in tatters, bus-stand waterlogged

Published on:

The old bus stand which is only meant for parking of Government buses has now become an illegal parking place for auto rickshaws and private buses.

As a result, the commuters as well as the roadside vendors of the locality have to bear the brunt of it. Besides, during the rainy season, the entire bus stand lies waterlogged as there is nothing to stop the water from entering inside it. Heaps of garbage and mud are found all around the bus stand.

Similarly the Umarkote-Kondagam State Highway, particularly near Dongri Street, is in a pathetic condition as it has been damaged severely due to heavy rain and landslide. The condition of the street normally turns grim during rainy season every year due to the falling of slides from the peak of the hills nearby causing untold problems to the commuters and the locals. As there is no drainage system on both sides of the main road to drain out rainwater, the low-lying areas adjacent to the road get flooded with water creating a lot of inconveniences for the locals residing by Dongri Street. Further, dirty water coming from houses stagnates on the road emitting foul smell and spreading contagious diseases.

It may be mentioned here that the Municipality officials had constructed a concrete guard wall a few years back but it collapsed within a few days due to rushing stream of water during shower. The pathetic condition of the road is a worry for all as it connects Chhattisgarh. Though the problem has been brought to the notice of the concerned authorities, nothing has been done to solve it. The insanitary condition of the town has become a great concern as no steps are taken to apply bleaching powder and other disinfectants in the street to get rid of insects though the rainy season is still on.

The sweepers rarely clean the gutters. The result is dirty water accumulating on the streets causing a great threat to the health of the residents. To make matter worse, some cows and bulls in the street not only obstruct the traffic but also add to the filth by their dung andfodder refuse.
