The Project Ujjwal, a part of the UKAid, has prepared a roadmap to promote improved family planning (FP) methods in order to bring down maternal deaths from unwanted pregnancies in Odisha.

“The project aims to reduce maternal deaths from unwanted pregnancies by increasing use of family planning (FP) methods, improving birth spacing practices and preventing unsafe abortions in Bihar and Odisha,” functionaries of the project said.

They informed that the roadmap has been prepared under the ‘Improved Family Planning (FP) and Reproductive Health (RH) Services in India” project which is aimed at improving reproductive, maternal and newborn health in the developing countries. The project focuses on behaviours that all couples can practice to become health competent and also work for change at the service delivery and policy levels, translating into the concept of smart couples, smart communities and smart providers, they said.

SIHFW Director Dr Bijayini Mohapatra and JHU-CCP Asia team leader Dr Sanjanthi Velu hoped that the project would be very fruitful in Odisha as the State is a good place to work. “The team is going do a great work of changing behavior which is very important and difficult as well,” Velu said.
