DM plans to register migrant labourers, contractors

The Dharambandha police on Saturday arrested and court-forwarded two labour contractors of Biromal village on the charge of kidnapping a migrant labourer, Daulat Sabar, of Maharadihi village in Nuapada district.

According to a complaint lodged by Daulat’s mother Tila Bai, Basant Bariha and Jubru Majhi had kidnapped Daulat from her house on Thursday and placed a demand that he would be released only after advance amounts allegedly taken by some labourers of her village repaid to them.

Acting on her complaint, the police rescued Daulat from Jubru’s house and arrested the duo on Saturday.

“Basant and Jubru tortured me and told me to repay advance of `1 lakh they had allegedly paid to some labourers of our village,” said Daulat.

Coinciding with the arrest of these two contractors, Nuapada district Collector Jaykumar V conducted a meeting with district officials and mediapersons to discuss about a strategy he had made to contain the illegal migration. “We are not against migration but we want it be regulated and safe. We are preparing a comprehensive plan of action,” Jaykumar has said. Jayakumar said migrant labours willing to migrate outside the district would be enlisted. The process would otherwise help the administration to identify labour pockets and implement various employment generation programmes in those areas. Besides, registered contractors would be allowed to take enlisted labourers as per their requirement. Contractors of the neighboring districts would also be invited to take part in the regulated labour market of the district.

District Employment, livelihood Generation and Habilitation Teams (DElIGHT) have been formed at district, block and gram panchayat levels to monitor this process, he said.
