The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is planning to build two concrete pillars to support the wall adjacent to the Jaya-Vijaya sculpture near the Singhadwar (lion’s Gate) of the Shree Jagannath Temple.
The technical committee formed for repairs, which inspected the Singhadwar on Tuesday, said two stone pillars would have to be constructed to protect the upper portion of the lion’s Gate that is in dilapidated condition.
The committee also inspected the Gumuta of the lion’s Gate and the portions which were affected by concrete beams of the Badachhata Mutt and Pratihari Niyog building.
The committee asked the ASI, the caretaker of the 12th-centuey temple, to erect the stone pillars within a month.
The committee expressed concern over the degree of damage done to the Singhadwar by the concrete beams of the illegal constructions near it. The committee also expressed its displeasure over ASI Superintendent Engineer AK Patel’s delay in submission of the status report on the temple to it.
